Judaic Studies Educators
OUR SCHOOL
Founded in 1998, Vancouver Hebrew Academy (VHA) is a family comprised of its students, parents, educators, administrators and supporters. This notion of family informs everything we do, whether it is in communication between teachers and parents, promoting respect for the diversity of Jewish practice and customs within our school community, or in celebrating our own students’ achievements and those of Jews worldwide.
Mission
Vancouver Hebrew Academy is a warm and inclusive elementary school serving the diverse needs of Jewish students and their families in Greater Vancouver.
Our mission is to teach Torah Judaism and values through a strong and balanced curriculum of Jewish and General studies. We believe that Torah education inspires the pursuit of academic excellence and provides children with the foundation skills to fortify their Jewish identity and ignite in them a passion for a lifetime of exploring their Jewish heritage and the world.
Accreditation + Affiliations
Vancouver Hebrew Academy is fully accredited with the British Columbia Ministry of Education, a member of the Federation of Independent School Associations of British Columbia, and a member of Torah Umesorah, the National Society of Hebrew day schools. VHA is also a constituent agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver.
Vancouver Jewish Community
VHA prides itself on being a key part of the Orthodox Jewish community in Vancouver. The greater Jewish community boasts many amenities, an Orthodox high school for girls (Shalhevet High School), kosher food outlets, and several synagogues and co-educational Jewish schools. A central hub is the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, which houses a recreational complex, kosher restaurant, meeting spaces, theatre and dance facilities, Jewish library and two museums, the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre and the Vancouver Jewish Museum and Archives.
Judaic Studies
VHA’s Judaic studies program is designed to give students the confidence, skills and desire to live as Jews and to encourage a lifelong interest in Jewish learning. The skills-based curriculum has been developed within the framework of the school’s educational philosophy to meet the diverse needs of our school community. Our goal is to provide the essential tools our students will need to allow them to continue and achieve success in their Jewish education through high school and beyond, in both formal and informal settings. Students study Chumash (Bible), Halacha
(Jewish law), Jewish holidays and customs, Jewish History, Mishna, Talmud and Hebrew language. The Hebrew language curriculum is a comprehensive language acquisition program that also meets the BC Ministry
of Education requirement for a second language.
General Studies
VHA prides itself on providing the highest standard of general studies education. Using the British Columbia Ministry of Education curricular framework, our general studies program is customized by our staff to fit
the individual needs of each student and each class. Our integrated approach to instruction includes exposure to the fine arts, as well as exciting and meaningful educational experiences. In addition, we offer an athletics program that teaches the importance of physical activity, individual achievement, teamwork and sportsmanship. VHA recognizes the unique opportunities and challenges inherent to each stage of a child’s schooling. Our educators strive to understand the developmental, social and educational needs of each student as he progresses through his schooling and work to maximize his learning potential.
Little Stars Daycare
Tradition blended with emotional growth and preliminary academic being — VHA Daycare provides an integrated and well-balanced curriculum of Judaic and General Studies that affords many opportunities
for children to explore and learn as they strengthen their Jewish identity.
Our goal is to foster a lifelong love of Torah Judasim through an early learning program that supports learning, exploration, and wonder.
Our incredible team of educators provide a warm, caring, engaging and inclusive learning environment for the children as they grow and develop socially, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and cognitively.
Vancouver Hebrew Academy proudly provides its Jewish Daycare Program, for 3- and 4-year old children, Monday through Friday from 8:25 am to 4:00 pm.
We have full-time and part-time opportunities for knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and caring Rebbeim and Morot to teach Judaic Studies with a start date of Fall 2022. Full-time teachers teach two grade levels – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Our curriculum begins with Kriah in the early years and expands to include Chumash, Chagim/Dinim, Navi, Ivrit and Jewish History.
Candidates should ideally have smicha and/or hold an education degree, and have a minimum of 1 year of elementary school teaching experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate educator or husband and wife team interested in making a significant impact on our school and the entire community. Couples who are open to taking on roles beyond VHA to deliver shiurim, entertain on Shabbat and yom tov, work with various shuls, and serve as Modern Orthodox role models will be a great fit. Additionally, we can facilitate employment for a spouse with other local Jewish institutions or in other fields (IT, healthcare, etc.).
Professional Requirements:
• Completion of a post-secondary Judaic Studies program (Yeshiva or Seminary)
• Completion of a teacher training course (certificate or degree program)
• Eligibility for a BC Independent School Teachers Certificate
